Starting therapy for the first time can feel unfamiliar. Knowing what to expect may make the process easier.
Your first appointment is primarily an opportunity for your therapist to understand you and what brought you to therapy. You may discuss your current concerns, relevant personal history, relationships, stressors, symptoms, coping strategies, and what you hope will improve.

You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what is wrong or what you want to discuss. Part of the therapeutic process involves making sense of your experiences together.
You should also have an opportunity to ask questions. Therapy works best when you understand the process and feel comfortable discussing your concerns with your therapist.

Following the initial assessment, you and your therapist can identify priorities and begin developing goals for treatment.
Most importantly, therapy is not about being judged or being told how you should live your life. It is a collaborative process designed to help you better understand yourself, navigate challenges, and work toward meaningful change.
